Strengthened by Faith

WILL YOU HELP MORE KIDS LIKE LIAM RECEIVE COUNSELING?

When Margaret’s 9-year-old grandson, Liam, was referred to Catholic Charities for counseling support, they were unsure of what to expect. Over the past two years, Liam has worked closely with Catholic Charities counselor, Karen Campbell, who has integrated the Catholic faith into therapy with Liam.

“Soon after starting to work with Karen, we saw her cantering at church,” Margaret recalled. “It was a full circle moment. Realizing we share the same values and community made us feel even more supported.”

The sessions have also strengthened Liam’s faith as he recently took his first sacraments at school, as well as gained an understanding of his mother’s personal growth.

“Faith is very important to our family,” said Margaret. “Just incorporating the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ motto into some of his sessions has helped him see things through a different lens regarding his mom.”

Through creative, hands-on sessions involving board games and calming moments with therapy dog Duke, Karen has helped Liam navigate past trauma with his mother. Her approach has empowered the family to address behavioral challenges spurred by ADHD, enabling Liam to thrive both at home and school.

“Not only have the sessions been helpful for Liam, but they have been a lifeline for me and my husband,” said Margaret. “We found ourselves navigating situations we didn’t really understand. Karen has often shared resources so we can better support Liam at home.”

Catholic Charities’ sliding scale and affordable services have been a lifeline for this family to receive services.

“Without your support, we wouldn’t have been able to receive these services,” adds Margaret.
