Catholic Charities to Hold News Conference to Address Arrival of Afghan Refugees
Fort Wayne, IN - Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend (CCFWSB) will hold a news conference about the resettlement of Afghan refugees in the Fort Wayne area on Wednesday, November 17, at 11 a.m. at the University of Saint Francis Historic Women’s Club, located at 402 West Wayne Street.
Catholic Charities of Fort Wayne-South Bend Interim CEO Dan Florin, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, and other community partners from East Allen County Schools, law enforcement agencies, and Camp Atterbury will share insight into how the community works together to welcome refugee families and address questions regarding resettlement processes.
“Recent events in Afghanistan have led to a humanitarian crisis,” says Dan Florin, Interim CEO of CCFWSB. “Since 1975, Catholic Charities has been called upon to help war-torn families put their lives back together. We will be assisting these families with basic needs, housing, and employment, among other things. We want to ensure the community understands how the process works and that all questions are answered.”
Former Afghan refugee Samir Zubair, now a district manager for an area food chain, will also speak at the news conference to recount his 20-year journey to arriving in this country and how it changed his life.
For 25 years, CCFWSB has been resettling refugees from 20 countries.
The media is invited and encouraged to attend the news conference.
